It appears that the trend for television is to head towards greater specialization. Cable television is quickly expanding, adding new specialty channels periodically. Variety shows are being replaced by shows based entirely on comedy or music. It seems that television is turning into a library of categorized information. However, this is not the case. In fact, it is the combination of new technologies and a large number of specialty cable channels that make the television a generalizing medium. As we apparently become more specialized, we are actually becoming more generalized.
