A cyborg is basically something that is part human, part machine. With television becoming an increasingly important aspect of people’s lives, it is not unthinkable to see our connection with the TV set as a cyborg relationship. The cathode ray tube bombards the retina with electrons, creating an image inside the eye, while the remote control puts the TV antenna inside your hand. This physiological connection to the television turns the viewer into a participator. The participator is part of the medium, making McLuhan’s “extension of the senses” theory more literal. As a participator, one can absorb
the data stream from the medium independant from its organization. Even if all of the information on golf is on one channel, this does not limit the participator from absorbing both it and the story of Amelia Earhart at almost the same time via the last channel button. Television sets that enable more than one channel to be on the screen at the same time further this affect by increasing the data available at a time.
