So you want to know how to protect yourself? Well, you've come to
the right place.
1. How to hide from the boss.
- Don't be stupid.
- You wouldn't call a drug dealer from work... so why do it over
the Net?
- Think before you send.
- Don't use company email for personal emails. Instead, sign up for one of
those free email services like Hotmail or Excite.
- If you think the phone lines are bugged, use the payphone.
- Cache out each day.
- Even if it was by accident, you don't want MYBOSSSUCKS.COM to be
sitting on your computer at the end of the night. Your browser
has a memory of all the sites you have visited for a set amount of
time. So clear it out.
- Don't do it at work.
2.How to make sure you're a dog on the Net.
- Create an Alias
- Don't create something stupid. If your name is Michael
Yanover the name yanovermike is not exactly hard to figure out.
Instead go for things that have nothing to do with anything,
like coffeepapper_119. It will be a lot harder to crack. This
is also great for those annoying cards the grocery stores
require to get discounts.
- Cover your tracks
- Caching out (as mentioned above) is great. Clear out the
History of your browser. Get an anonymizer. Ones from
ANONYMIZER.COM or IDZAP.COM will cover your tracks and then
some, making it virtually impossible for anyone save the FBI
to know where you have been.
- Don't say anything that gives your identity away.
3.How to secure yourself from hackers, the government, and the
pimply kid next door.
- Surf Secretly
- Start your day by going to SILENTSURF.COM. This prevents
anybody from seeing where you hang out on the web.
- Opt-out
- Check the box that prevents a company from gathering info on
what you buy.
- Set a fire
- Get a firewall if you are on a DSL or cable connection. These
services are essentially party lines and anyone can pick up
and use it. A firewall protects your computer from people trying
to hack it. Firewalls from Black Ice usually work well.
- Be paranoid
- Get the software Tweak UI from CNET DOWNLOAD.COM. Set it to
the paranoid option and protect yourself.
You don't have to take any of this advice but I know I like
to do what I want and not have Big Brother looking over my
shoulder.
