Intel Inside?by Steve CampbellThe thought that one day a very large part of the modern world could be run by computers or robots is a very real possibility. When a company comes out with a new "smart" computer that is implemented into a vacuum so it is fully automated to clean the floor without the assistance of a human, people think that this is the greatest advance in household cleaning. This is just the beginning. What if there were robots that could do your job just as well as you but never needed a break and never made any mental errors? This would probably put you into the ranks of the unemployed. It is possible to think that one day we may all have computer chips implanted into our heads so we can be tracked wherever we go or even alter our train of thought so we don't commit crimes. The world is headed towards a full digital world where humans are digitally controlled by tiny microchips in their heads.
"Will people some day have a stamp on their forehead saying "Intel Inside"?" This is the type of question that is being thrown around in the world today about the future of the human mind. Most would agree that there will be a microchip developed that could alter the thought process of any human. This could be a major step in lowering the crime rate worldwide because known criminals could be "programmed" to control their criminal behavior. For the rest of us, it leads to a very large moral question; how far will these chips be allowed to go before you have a remote control human unable to make even the simplest decisions on its own? Will the chips be implanted at birth and a large central computer make the necessary changes to that person's mind as they go through life? All these questions show that there could be a huge controversy in the future over the possibility of mind control. This could very well lead to major outbursts of violence towards the people who are on opposite sides of the mind control divide. When there is a computer virus that is spread through the e-mail system it is frightening for all who use e-mail to operate their computers. All it takes is for you to open your e-mail messages and then your computer is infected with a virus. If people end up with computer chips in their heads, they too could be susceptible to the effects of computer viruses. Assuming that these human chips would be controlled through wireless connections makes the problem of viruses all the more dangerous. As long as there are connections between computers there will be viruses because there are those out there who are always looking to make a name for themselves through virus creation and problems with computers will always arise. So who's to say that humans could not contract computer viruses? This is something that will play a large roll in the human computer chip because who would want to live in fear that they could get sick from another computer with a virus. The world is heading towards a controversy and it will be a dark day when the debate begins over implants in humans.
With the idea that there could be computer chips installed into humans there will be the need to have computers that can keep up to the masses of people with computer brains. The power that these computers need will dwarf computers of today because of the split second, up-to-date decisions that it will take to make the human chips work. If these computers have the power to keep track of all the people in the world, there is no real way to tell where the human and the computer end because these computers are capable of so much more than any one person. There may come that feared day when computers become self-reliant and begin to think for themselves. If computers become smart enough to make their own decisions then chaos would break out in the world. It may go to the point that computers become the dominant species on earth and humans are demoted to secondary beings. If computers make their way to this level of power then they could easily control most of the people who had computer chips in their brains because the computers would have the power to remotely control the majority of the human race. Many people today strongly believe that with the rate at which computers are advancing, it is only a matter of time before intelligent robots begin to claim jobs from humans. The great thing about robots over humans is they require no wages, which means fewer costs, no chance of strike, and robots rarely need breaks. Companies could work with very low costs and they could produce goods at very fast rates. This is a large fear of future generations: how will people make money if they can't get a job? A robotic world would have huge implications on everyone because there would be all this money going to a very small number of people and absolutely none going to all the unemployed. Robots could unknowingly take over the world, so to speak, by taking all the jobs and doing them better than humans. This is a prime example of how technology could shoot us in the foot if we're not careful.
The future is shaping up to be a grim place for the average person. The thought that computer chips can be implanted into our brains at birth without our consent is very real. The day that people call into work sick with a computer virus that they contracted through wireless connection to a server is the day we have gone too far. One-day computers may not need us to do anything for them and the human race will no longer be on top of the food chain. If super computers don't push humans into hiding, robots could steal our jobs and leave us to live off the land like pioneers. If the modern world is not careful about the advances in technology, we could be headed for a very dark future on Earth. © Steve Campbell2001
