Employment Resources on the World Wide Web

The Internet has become a common tool in most workplaces. Many companies take advantage of the World Wide Web to promote their product. The World Wide Web is also an excellent medium for those seeking employment to promote themselves. Online resumes, job databases, and corporate employment pages are three of the most effective employment resources on the World Wide Web.

Online Resumes

The traditional resumé has undergone some changes in the information age. Resumés created using HTML (HyperText Markup Language) are becoming quite popular. Hundreds of thousands of hypertext resumés can be found on the World Wide Web, ranging from the
very simple, beautifully intricate, or completely unorthodox. Hypertext resumés are usually quite similar to traditional resumés, with a few differences. Hypertext resumés may use multimedia, mixing text with pictures, audio, and even video clips. People with artistic or design backgrounds will find this very useful when creating an online portfolio. Another important feature is the use of links. A resumé's author can include links to his or her past employers and educational institutions, provided that they have a web page. A hypertext resumé also lets prospective employers know that the resumé's author is able to use HTML, a skill which is becoming more and more useful in any workplace.

However, simply putting your resumé on a server will not guarantee that potential employers will see it. Many people include the address of their hypertext resumé on their traditional resumé, allowing potential employers to access additional information on the hypertext resumé. However, a hypertext resumé can be used independently from a traditional resumé when applying for a job over the Internet. In order to allow employers to easily find their resumé, most people place their resumes in a database. Web sites such as Yahoo! have Resumé sections where they divide personal resumés into categories according to industry, making it simple to find the right type of resumé.

Job Databases

There are also comprehensive job databases on the World Wide Web that offer more than just resumés. Web sites like
Career Mosaic and The Monster Board hold hundreds of thousands of job postings in their online databases. The Monster Board Canada contains thousands of job postings for Canada alone. It contains many useful tools, such as a Job Search Engine, a Resumé Database, and Employer Profiles.

An interesting tool available through The Monster Board is its Personal Job Search Agent. A job seeker simply enters the criteria for any jobs that interest them , and the "agent", or software, searches The Monster Board Database for any positions that fit the criteria. What makes the Personal Job Search Agent so useful is that it is always active, even when the user is offline. It is an excellent way to conduct a job search without spending a lot of time.

Corporate Employment Pages

Many business web sites have a page devoted simply to "Jobs". These are similar to the "Help Wanted" section of the newspaper, except that the only positions they list are those with their own company. Many of these sites even allow job applicants to submit resumes or fill out applications directly from the web site. Corporate employment web pages are only useful to those who have a clear idea with which organization they wish to work for.

Some corporate employment pages

Interestingly enough,
Maple Leaf Foods, recently involved in several disputes with workers, doesn't have a "Jobs" page, although there is a blank space on their main menu indicating that there once might have been one.

The only major drawback to all of these resources is that unless you live in a large city, most of the jobs that you can find on the Internet will require you to relocate. Part-time or unskilled jobs are also seldom posted on the Web. However, for career-minded professionals willing to relocated, the World Wide Web offers excellent resources to conduct a job search.
