Home is where the ip address is.

At the start of the 21st century, proper use of the personal computer (pc) in the home includes its ability to act as post office and library. Hopefully on the main floor near an entrance to the home, the pc can be given the role of correspondence handler and librarian archivist. Entering your home you may check for messages and turn on music creating a personalized environment not affordably duplicated in the earlier home of even the 1980’s.

The ability of the pc to emulate additional media is very desirable. The home stereo, VCR, and the printed word are having their delivery methods expanded by the ability of the pc to increase information access in the home.

Let's look first at the musical nature of the pc. The pc can currently deliver a study of the music created over the past twenty years and beyond. A thorough archiving of many titles is already currently available on the internet. It is the delivery of newly-created music which is most amazing. Currently, a musician can have a completed musical composition available to the world audience in under 60 minutes. Once posted on the world wide web, music becomes available instantly.

Books now are relieved of the burden of being the sole information providers.  The home has access to medical literature greater in depth and breadth than a trip to the local medical doctor.  Not just in the area of medicine, modern libraries connected to the internet provide access to information no person previously had the fortune to be able to access. Most of the other sciences are well represented with complete studies of their respective fields which are available to all with the simple use of the pc.

Cooking can also take on the character of the world wide web with recipes that transport you around the world. Consumption takes on a fruitful experience when menu planning visits the ports of the world. If you want to avoid some foods, like meat,  you can now easily find menu planners that would have required significant time investment to locate prior to the pc.

The ability of the pc to demand and receive information makes home a place unachievable even twenty years ago. The modern home, with its automated post office and library, allows cosmopolitan living and exposure to culture not previously available.
