The Liberal Studies Faculty at Malaspina
has proposed 2 three credit courses that would take place during the summer
over a one month period in
Florence, Italy. These courses will be components
of the Liberal Studies Program and will explore rich and varied material
from the humanities, fine arts and sciences. The first travel-study program
is planned for May 1997.
Entitled Special Topics in Western Culture I and II:
The Italian Renaissance, each course will comprise an interdisciplinary
treatment of cultural currents in the Italian Renaissance, including visual
art, literature, political philosophy and science. Possible figures for study
include Dante, Machiavelli,
Galileo, Giotto,
Fra Angelico, Michelangelo,
Palestrina,
Monteverdi and Botticelli. Topics will vary but
may include Galileo and the Church, Renaissance Art and Humanism, Visions of
Heaven and Hell, Women and the Italian Renaissance, and Florentine Politics.
The course delivery format will include seminars, lectures and a studio art
component. Assignments may include papers, class presentations and art or
science projects.
We anticipate
that each week would focus on a different aspect of
the curriculum, For example, one week could be devoted to a study of aspects of
Renaissance art which would include a studio component. The second week might
take up Galileo's contributions to astronomy and the physics of motion and
their impact on the Catholic Church. The third week could focus on political
philosophy, examining Machiavelli and the Medici family. In addition to the
lecture, seminar and studio components of the courses, we would anticipate
incorporating walking tours of important Florentine sites.
These courses
would be open to currently enrolled students in Liberal Studies and
other individuals with appropriate backgrounds. If you are interested in
