Specialists in pronunciation, adult education, intercultural communication, innovative teaching methods, and translation.
Many languages spoken including Chinese, Korean, Thai, Japanese, French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Hebrew.

Jennifer Allin, B.A., L.L.B., M.Ed., Teaching Cert.

I especially enjoy teaching advanced levels of ESL. I am interested in critical thinking. In my spare time I enjoy walking, curling, watching figure skating, reading, and traveling.

Chris Aronson, B.A., Ph.D. (ABD), Diploma Applied Linguistics

Chris has lived in Japan, China, Thailand and Vietnam. Chris regularly instructs teachers how to teach ESL. Chris enjoys traveling and learning about different cultures.

Susan Aronson, B.A., TESL Certificate

Susan has lived in China, Thailand, Japan, The U.S.A., and in Canada. She has been teaching ESL for 23 years. Susan also teaches Canadians how to teach English abroad.

Liz Astill, B.A., TESOL Diploma

Liz has taught ESL in England, Africa, Canada and Taiwan. Liz has a special interest in listening and speaking activities for students.

Les Barclay, B.Com., B.Ed.

Les has lived and taught ESL in Thailand and Korea and has traveled to most countries in Asia. He met his wife in Thailand and together they opened a Thai restaurant in Nanaimo. Les is quite interested in the use of the internet to assist language learning.

Allan Brown, B.A., Dip. Applied Linguistics, M.Ed.

Allan has lived in many countries in Asia, the South Pacific, Central America, South America and Europe. He enjoys being with people from different cultures and backgrounds.

Lucy Colby, M. Ed.

Lucy has taught all levels of ESL at Malaspina University-College. Lucy's special interest is in the relationship between language and culture.

Marie has lived in Munich, Germany and has taught ESL for eight years. Marie's special interest is hockey. She regularly takes her students to hockey games.

Lisa Eckert, B.A., TESL, M.Ed.

Lisa teaches regularly at all levels of the ESL program. She is active in the theatre.

Christine has taught ESL for 10 years, both locally and overseas. From Micronesia to Vancouver Island, she infuses her classes with her love for music, drama, and life.

Maurice Gallant, B.A., M.A., TESL Certificate

Maurice has been a Malaspina ESL instructor since 1981. He has a B.A. and M.A. in Asian Studies (China emphasis) from the University of Victoria. He has taught ESL in China and South Korea. Maurice met his wife in Beijing, China. They have two children.

Sonia Harley, M.Ed.

Sonia has lived in Jamaica, Britain, France, The U.S.A. and Canada. She teaches regularly at the lower levels of ESL at Malaspina. Sonia is particularly interested in teaching students to use the computer to learn English.

Wendy Harrison, B.A., M.A. (in progress)

Wendy has taught ESL in Israel, Japan and Taiwan. She particularly loves teaching advanced writing and grammar.

Carla teaches regularly at the lower levels of Malaspina's ESL program. Carla's special interest is in encouraging students to bring humour, laughter, patience and a love of learning to class.

Mary Jane McLaughlin, B.A., TESOL Diploma

Mary Jane teaches at the upper levels of Malaspina's ESL program. Mary Jane regularly incorporates her love of literature, film and music into her classes.

Joy McWhirter, B.Sc., M.Ed.

Joy has taught in Italy and Canada. She teaches mostly at the lower levels and has taught ESL specialized programs. Joy has completed a Masters degree in Education.

Sharon Minkoff, T.C.C., Dip. TESOL, B.Ed.

Sharon Minkoff has been teaching ESL at Malaspina for the past three years. Before coming to Canada she taught ESL in England, Spain, Japan, and Israel.

Dana Moen, B.A., B.Ed.

Dana teaches regularly at the higher levels of the ESL program. She is most interested in helping students develop confidence in themselves.

Suzy Nachtsheim, B.A., M.A.

Suzy spent 20 years in Japan before coming to Malaspina where she has been teaching the upper levels of the ESL program. She holds a Master's degree in English. Her pastimes include cooking, puttering around the house and playing with her two cats, Andy and Buddy.

Stephanie Parker, B.A., Teaching Certificate, M.Ed., PhD. (in progress)

Stephanie has taught all levels of ESL in Canada, China and Thailand. She has traveled in U.S.A., China, Japan, and Thailand. Stephanie is developing new assessment materials for ESL.

Sheila Swanson, M.Ed.

Sheila is the Director of ESL. Sheila has taught at all levels of ESL.

Lori O'Rorke, B.A., M.A.

Lori has taught in Japan for six years, from kindergarten to university classes and everything in between. She has been at Malaspina since 1999 and enjoys teaching reading and writing courses as well as listening and speaking. Lori instructs in the Teaching English Overseas program where she specializes in pronunciation.

Lone Odgers, B.Sc., RSA Cert.

Lone has taught EFL/ESL since 1986. She has taught immigrants and international students in Canada and corporate clients for 10 years in Japan.

Sue Shardlow, B.A., TESL Certificate

Sue has a wide variety of experience in B.C.'s education system. She has worked with special needs as well as First Nations students at the secondary level in Nanaimo from 1992-2001. She has been teaching ESL since 1997 and has taught both beginning and advanced levels at Malaspina.
