Where can I live?

Students can choose from Homestay (living with a Canadian family), Peerstay (living with a Canadian family with no meals included), in the Student Residences,or in off-campus accommodation (see Housing List).

How long will it take?

It depends on which program you choose. Malaspina offers English language programs, vocational programs, and degree programs. The ESL programs page is here. Click here to see a complete list of Malaspina's programs.

Can I meet people?

We believe "there is more to life than study." Malaspina's International department organizes many activities like field trips, social events and parties as well as, recreational and sporting activities for students to have fun and to make friends.

Where is Malaspina University-College?

Malaspina's main campus is located in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada on the east coast of Vancouver Island. The city of Vancouver is 20 minutes away by air, or 1 1/2 hours away by ferry, a distance of 30 miles.

How much does it cost?

It costs about $21,000 Cdn (about $14,000 US) for one year of study. This amount includes tuition, student fees (3 semesters), medical insurance, and living costs. Click here for more detailed costs.

How do I apply?

You can contact us by phone (250) 740-6318, by fax (250) 740-6472 or by e-mail: study@mala.bc.ca and we will send you an application form and information about applying for study at Malaspina University-College.

How do I get a Student Visa?

If you are planning to study in Canada for more than 90 days (including weekends), you must have a valid Student Authorization from Canada Immigration before you come to Canada. Many countries require their citizens to have a visitor's visa and a medical certificate before coming to Canada. These documents are issued by an immigration official in a Canadian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate. You will need to have a letter of acceptance from Malaspina University-College and other documents before you will be granted a Student Authorization. Please see The British Columbia Centre for International Education or Citizenship and Immigration Canada for more information.

When can I start class?

Malaspina has 3 semesters per year – September, January and May. Not all programs and courses are offered each semester. See the web page of the program you are interested in, our ESL programs page, or our complete program list or contact our International Admissions Manager, Jane Kelly by e-mail at: study@mala.bc.ca for more information. Remember to apply early.

What if I get sick?

If you do get sick, British Columbia has a modern, accessible health care system but you are required to have health insurance during your stay. You may purchase insurance before you leave home or you can purchase it when you arrive here. Information about medical insurance will be sent to you when you apply.

Will I like the food?

Nanaimo, British Columbia is a fully modern city of 75,000 people of many different cultures. There are lots of food stores and restaurants to satisfy many different tastes.

What is the weather like?

Nanaimo, B.C. enjoys one of the mildest climates in Canada. The daily average temperature is 18 degrees C. in July and 4.4 degrees C. in December. You will need warm clothes in the winter when it rains and gets cooler. But in the spring, summer and fall you will want lighter clothing for warmer days outdoors.
