Malaspina University-College's
2-year Forest
Resources Technology diploma program is accredited with the
Applied Science Technicians and Technologists of BC and the Association of BC Professional
Foresters and provides up-to-the-minute information on all
aspects of forestry, including silviculture, forest health, forest
inventory and engineering.
Labs are conducted in the field as well as through G.I.S. application.
Malaspina applies advanced techniques in timber cruising measurement
and shares their findings and experiences with the forest industry.
Ongoing research includes growth and yield, biosolids fertilization,
and mechanical site preparation.
International
Field Schools and exchanges with other forestry technology schools
have recently become part of the forestry curriculum. Student fund
raising financed trips to Finland in 1999, New Zealand in 2000,
the UK in 2001 and Belize in 2002.
Future trips are planned to Chile and France.
Students appreciate the small classes (28 students maximum)
and the fact that they may also use the program as a stepping
stone towards an R.P.F.,
or one year towards a Forestry
Degree at the University of British Columbia, the University
of Northern British Columbia and the University of Alberta.
