Lesson Plan

Adopted from Keepers of the Earth

Grade: 4 Seashore Symphony

  1. Rationale:

Students will understand the importance of having tides and will be involved in a concrete experience that will connect them to the ocean.

2. Statement of Learning Outcome(s):

Students will understand why tides go out.

Students will recognize that there are many different sounds along the seashore that can be heard by listening closely.

3. Learning Activities:

STEP A:

a) Discuss tidal zones.

b) Questions

Why does Raven want the tide to go out? Is it a good thing that he succeeds in getting the tide to go out?

What causes the tides?

STEP B:

c) Divide students into groups and have them answer the above questions drawing from the story and the discussion on tides.

d) Each group shares their response with the class.

STEP C:

e) Travel to the seashore and have each child pick up a handful of small shells or pebbles from the tidal zone.

f) Once you have reached the water, gather the group into a circle and give them the following instructions.

STEP D:

g) "The seashore is a symphony of sounds made by wind, waves, plants and animals living here. Let’s listen carefully by closing our eyes and concentrating on the sounds around us."

h) "To begin with, hold all of your shells or pebbles in your right hand. Then, every time you hear a different sound, place one of the shells or pebbles from your right hand into your left hand. This will help you remember the number of sounds you hear and what those sounds are."

STEP E:

I) Give the children about three or four minutes of silence and then have them open their eyes.

j) Ask them to describe and imitate the sounds they heard and try to figure out what made the sounds.

STEP F:

k) Back in the classroom, ask the students to write about the sounds they heard and what they believe caused the sounds.
