Japanese Ink Painting

Historical / Cultural Significance

Throughout Japanese ink paintings are the elements of philosophy, literature, and religion, specifically the concept of Zen. Zen, which means meditation or contemplation, is also the name of the religious Buddhist sect of Japan. It teaches that the true nature of one's mind can only be achieved through a higher state of thinking by meditating. Japanese ink painting is art that truely expresses the inner emotions and interests of the Japanese people. The achievement of Nirvana, the place of inner truth through meditation and nature are the two most popular subjects of ink paintings.

Principles and Elements of Design

The artists use carefully placed brushstrokes of ink that can be thick and heavy, or thin single lines that create tiny details. Sometimes, light color is added, especially gold and earth tones to create depth and add beauty. In scene paintings, however, more details are added and the element of depth is created by overlapping objects.
