Ukrainian Pysanky

Assembled by Lynne Murray

Historical / Cultural Significance

The ancient Ukrainians were sun worshippers. The sun warmed the earth and was therefore the source of all life. Eggs decorated with nature symbols (using line and shape), were used in sun worship ceremonies and became an integral part of spring ritual to welcome back the sun and ensure fertility and rebirth of all living things. A pagan legend describes the Sun god as the most important of all the gods. Birds were the Sun god's chosen creation for they could get closest to the sun. Humans could not catch the birds, but could obtain the eggs from the birds and so the eggs became magical objects that represented the source of life.

Ukrainian pysanky are not meant to be eaten. They are typically given to family members are respected outsiders. Pysanky designs are chosen to match the character of the person to whom the pysanka is to be given. Legend says that as long as pysanky are decorated, goodness will prevail over evil throughout the world.

Principles and Elements of Design

Line, color, form.

Technique/Methodology:

See other Unrainian art forms also. In addition, a pysanka is created using a wax resist technique. The designs are written or drawn on the egg using melted beeswax in a writing tool called a kystka. The egg is placed in a succession of colored dyes from lightest to darkest. The wax is used to cover up the lighter parts of the design between each dying stage, until the entire egg is done. The wax is then removed and the beautiful pattern is revealed.
