Viking Art
Assembled by Lana Kennelly
Historical / Cultural Significance
From the evidence that has been found, it seems that there were
no Viking artists who painted pictures. However, there were many Vikings who
carved pictures and patterns into stone and wood. Some pictures tell stories
of the Viking gods, while many of the patterns are done in what is called the
"gripping beast" design. This is full of swirling lines, but when you look
at them closely, you can see that there are many animals, each gripping onto
the next one. Other Vikings were skilled metalworkers, who worked in gold and
silver.
