You are invited to write a critical review on a book of your choice — provided the book deals with some aspect of the history of education and childhood in Canada. The reviews should run to between 1,000 and 1,200 words, about four pages. I want to approve your choice of books; so, please provide me with a photocopy of the title page of the book and the library call number of the book you intend to review. (If you have chosen a book from some other library collection, provide a photocopy of the title page, the library call number and indicate the name of the repository - e.g. UVic, UBC, Vancouver Island Regional Library, etc.)
I have prepared guidelines to assist you with this assignment. Before you get underway, be sure to read the guidelines carefully, look at the examples provided and make notes from them. Also, be sure to include some information about the qualifications of the author. And in the concluding section of your review, indicate how the book you have selected connects to or illuminates the topics and themes in our course. We'll be discussing this project in class and I will be available during office hours, if you have further questions.
Plagiarism, as you know, is a serious offence. To avoid any misunderstandings about the originality of your work, please retain your notes and rough drafts until your assignment is returned to you.
Your book review is due on Thursday, October 9th. Late papers may be penalized 5% per day. Reviews submitted after Thursday, October 16th, will not be accepted.
